Chennai-based bus major Ashok Leyland today unveiled their first electric bus powered by Chetan Maini's company Sun Mobility which is equipped with battery swapping technology.
Circuit S is India's first swap battery bus which is designed for Indian conditions with seating capacity ranging from 25-35 passengers. The smart batteries are smaller than regular batteries and are 1/4th the weight of a regular Lithium-ion battery.
By separating the battery from the bus for the first time, the upfront cost of the bus is drastically reduced to be on par with traditional diesel bus. Fully charged batteries can power the bus for 50-60 km and take under 4 minutes for swapping.
SUN mobility plans to build a network of Quick Interchange Stations that are easy to install and ensures quick refueling of buses to reduce downtime. The Smart Network helps keep a constant check on the battery vitals, station operations and enables fleet management.
Vinod Dasari, managing director, Ashok Leyland said, "This idea has the power to change the way our public transport system works. The Circuit -S bus will cost lesser, would require minimal maintenance owing to lesser moving parts and will have zero tailpipe emission."
