In a setback to Cyrus Mistry, independent directors of Tata Motors on Monday did not offer unanimous support to his leadership and instead backed all decisions taken by the company, including on small car Nano, which have been criticised by the ousted chairman of Tata Sons.
Tata Motors' issued the statement to the stock exchange late Friday after an internal letter by ousted chairman Cyrus Mistry said the cost of Nano's production was always higher than its Rs 100,000 (USD1,497.33) price tag and the project needed to be shut down if the company wanted to remain profitable.
The company, however, refuted Mistry's allegations that another reason for it not shutting down the Nano, besides emotional reasons, was the supply of gliders to an electric car maker in which Ratan Tata has a stake.
Sources tell CNBC-TV18 that independent directors of Tata Sons are likely to meet ahead of the November 14 scheduled meeting. They will be discussing the manner in which the Cyrus Mistry affair was handled. It is learnt these directors will also be bringing these concerns to the board.
