Cyclone

Cyclones are a vast violent whirl of 150-800 km, spiralling around a centre and progressing along the surface of the sea at a rate of 300-500 km a day, as per the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). Technically, it defines cyclones in the country as a rotational low-pressure system in tropics when the central pressure falls by 5-6hPa from the surrounding and maximum sustained wind speed reaches 34 knots (about 62 kmph). In terms of danger to life, not all cyclonic storms are not equally dangerous. More the pressure drops at the central region, the more will be the severity of the storm. The cyclonic storms are generally categorised according to the maximum wind associated with the storm. In times of a cyclone, landfall is the event of a tropical cyclone coming onto land after being over water. Most of the damage within a mature tropical cyclone occurs when the eye moves over land as most of the damaging aspects of these systems are concentrated there. The word itself is derived from the Greek ‘cyclos’ which means ‘coiling of a snake’, and was coined by Heary Piddington a British Raj era Rapporteur in Kolkata. Similarly, More

Cyclone Bomb batters northwest U.S. as its aftermath leaves trail of devastation | N18G

On November 20, a powerful "bomb cyclone" storm struck Washington state, causing widespread disruption. The storm, with tropical-storm-force winds reaching 50 mph (80 km/h) and gusts up to 70 mph (110 km/h), knocked out power to over 600,000 homes and businesses across Washington, southwest Oregon, and Northern California. It caused at least two deaths and two injuries and led to school closures in western Washington. The storm’s rapid intensification, known as bombogenesis, resulted from a collision between cold polar air and warm tropical air. By November 22, heavy rainfall was expected to hit parts of southwestern Oregon and Northern California, potentially reaching 20 inches (50 cm). In response, Canadian utility workers assisted with power restoration efforts in western Washington. As the storm moved toward California, a second powerful windstorm was expected to impact the region. The Pacific Northwest faced ongoing power outages and severe weather warnings.
