Mitra said West Bengal has the world's second-largest coal reserves, and shale gas reserves have also been found, which would push the mining industry in the state.

He said the move to privatise has brought a great sense of insecurity and distress among the people of the country. "May I express my shock and alarm at the policy decision of the Government of India venturing to privatise public sector insurance companies which are the pillars of the economy," Mitra said in the letter.

In his Budget speech, Mitra said the country is still suffering from the "hasty and improper" implementation of the GST, and the "shock" of demonetisation.
As a result of the faulty implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), the states earned Rs 78,929 crore less revenue since July 2017, which has been compensated by the Centre as per compensation law of the new indirect tax regime, he said.
The development surrounding RBI and CBI is a reflection of poor governance on the part of NDA government, Mitra said at a press conference here.

In the meeting, the GST Council decided that traders, manufacturers and restaurant owners with turnover of up to Rs 75 lakh can opt for a composition scheme and pay taxes at the rate of 1, 2, and 5 per cent respectively. Earlier, the Council had decided on a turnover limit of Rs 50 lakh.
Speaking at the annual regional meeting of CII here, he said that the state was among the top in terms of MSME investments and a major job provider.
"It is heartening that the leather industry in the state produces goods worth Rs 13,000 crore and we look forward to the industry reaching a target of Rs 15,000 crore within two years," Mitra said while inaugurating the Kolkata edition of India International Leather Fair (IILF).
West Bengal government is hopeful that the gas pipeline network to households in the city would be ready in another three years' time.
