A 34-year-old woman was shot dead, and her alleged lover sustained critical injuries after her estranged husband opened fire on them outside an examination centre in Uttar Pradesh’s Bulandshahr on Monday.
The woman, identified as Savitri, and her companion, Sarjeet Singh, had accompanied her 16-year-old son to his Class 10 board exam at an inter-college when the attack happened. Police said Savitri’s husband, Naresh Singh, and his brother were waiting near the exam centre and opened fire as soon as they saw the couple around.
Amid the chaos, the attackers escaped on motorcycle. SHO Dharmendra Singh said that Savitri was shot in the head and succumbed to her injuries during treatment, while Sarjeet was rushed to another hospital in critical condition.
According to the Times of India, an FIR has been registered against Naresh under BNS Section 103 (murder) based on a complaint by the couple’s son.
SP (city) Shankar Prasad Singh confirmed that a special team has been formed to track down the accused, who remains on the run.
Naresh, a resident of Ganghari village near Aurangabad police station, was married to Savitri for 17 years. The couple had two children, Akshanshu (16) and Khushi.
About a year ago, Savitri left her husband's home and started living with Noida-based Sarjeet Singh, who originally hails from her in-laws' village.
