Haryana ADGP Y Puran Kumar shoots himself dead in Chandigarh, reason not known

Senior Haryana IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, holding the rank of additional director general of police (ADGP), allegedly died by suicide at his official residence in Chandigarh's Sector 11 on Tuesday.

According to Times of India, Kumar reportedly shot himself at his government accommodation. The Chandigarh police rushed to the spot after receiving the information and have cordoned off the area. The weapon used in the incident has been recovered. The reason behind the suicide is not yet known. “An inquiry has been initiated. We are collecting evidence and recording statements of family members and staff. The cause of the incident will be determined after further investigation,” a senior police officer told TOI.

His body was found by his daughter in the basement of the house, which was reportedly soundproof.

Kumar’s wife, Amneet P Kumar,a senior IAS officer, is currently in Japan as part of an official delegation led by Haryana chief minister Nayab Singh Saini.

Puran Kumar, a senior IPS officer of the Haryana cadre, had been transferred on September 29 to Rohtak’s Sunaria Jail. Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh is serving a sentence in cases of sexual assault and other offences in Sunaria jail.

Several senior officials from the Haryana Police and Chandigarh administration rushed to his residence as news of the incident spread.

According to TOI, authorities are also examining whether recent professional developments or personal reasons may have contributed to the tragic step. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination. Police  told TOI that a suicide note has not yet been recovered from the scene. Further investigation is underway.
