Khalistani separatist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun said his outfit, Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), has been in touch with the office of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, sharing information against India after the killing of his aide, Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

According to a report by News18, Pannun told Canadian broadcaster CBC News in an interview that he gave information to Trudeau ‘detailing the spying network’ of the Indian diplomatic mission in Canada. ‘Sikhs for Justice’ has been communicating with the Prime Minister’s office for the last two to three years’, Pannun said in the interview, News18 reported.

The development comes at a time when diplomatic relations between India and Canada are at a historic low.

The rift intensified after the two countries expelled each other's ambassadors on Monday, following Canada's claims of increased Indian involvement in operations against Sikh separatists. Trudeau asserted that New Delhi had committed a "fundamental error" regarding these actions.

Tensions have heightened since Canada accused the Indian government of being involved in the killing of Nijjar, a Khalistani separatist leader who was shot dead outside a gurdwara in Canada’s Vancouver last year. Nijjar, a Canadian citizen, had been a prominent proponent of an independent Sikh state.

India had strongly rejected Canada's allegations, labelling them ‘absurd’ and ‘motivated’ and said Canada gives space to extremist and anti-India elements.
