A sniffer dog attached to 2 Para Special Forces was shot during the ongoing anti-terror operation in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district but continued to assist troops in tracking militants, officials said. The encounter ended with three terrorists, including Jaish-e-Mohammed commander Saifullah, being eliminated.

The operation in the forested Passerkut area of the Chatroo belt marks a significant blow to militant activity in the Doda-Kishtwar region.

According to officials cited by News18 Hindi, Tyson was the first to confirm the presence of terrorists in the operation zone on Sunday morning. As security forces advanced through dense forest terrain, the trained sniffer dog moved ahead of the column to locate the suspected hideout.

During the search, Tyson was hit by a bullet in his leg. Despite the injury, he stayed with the advancing troops and helped establish contact with the militants, guiding forces towards the hideout, News18 Hindi reported.

He was later airlifted to the Army hospital in Udhampur and is currently stable and recovering, as per a separate report by Jammu and Kashmir-based Daily Excelsior.

Army officials told News18 Hindi that Tyson has been part of several major operations. He is trained to detect explosives, identify suspicious locations and assist in tracking terrorists during search missions in difficult terrain.

Such canine units are routinely deployed in counter-insurgency operations across Jammu and Kashmir, particularly in forested and mountainous belts where visibility and access are limited.

The encounter led to the killing of three terrorists, including Jaish-e-Mohammed commander Saifullah, a Pakistani national. Security officials said he had been active in the Doda-Kishtwar region for years and was linked to multiple attacks.

Weapons and ammunition, including assault rifles, were recovered from the site. The Army described the operation as a significant success in curbing militant activity in the region.
