The Railway Protection Force (RPF) has taken action in response to multiple incidents of unruly behaviour on Kumbh Mela special trains in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh over the past few days.
Several videos circulating on social media show passengers pelting stones, breaking train windows, and forcefully trying to enter overcrowded trains.
According to The Indian Express, the RPF has registered four FIRs under the Railways Act and is investigating at least two more incidents.
According to railway officials, incidents have been reported at Ekma, Madhubani, and Danapur stations in Bihar, as well as Subedarganj station in Prayagraj. In one disturbing case, passengers inside a train were attacked with a wooden pole by people outside.
Another incident involved stone pelting at the Lichchavi Express at Ekma station, for which an FIR has been lodged under Section 153 of the Railways Act at Chhapra Junction.
On February 10, at Madhubani station, frustrated passengers who couldn’t board the Jaynagar-New Delhi Swatantrata Senani Express smashed several windows after finding the doors locked from the inside. Similarly, at Katihar station on February 12, overcrowding led to chaos as some passengers disrupted others’ boarding, prompting another FIR based on a viral video.
A shocking incident took place on February 9, when some devotees, unable to enter a locked train, climbed onto a non-working (watcher) engine in the middle of the night. Instead of filing an FIR, railway officials counseled the passengers and brought them down safely.
Another case of vandalism was reported on a Vande Bharat train at Subedarganj in Prayagraj, where the glass of coach C5 was shattered due to stone pelting. An FIR has been registered against unidentified persons in the case.
Railway officials are analysing CCTV footage from affected stations to identify those involved in these incidents. Authorities have assured strict action against the culprits.
