Amid growing concerns over the misuse of artificial intelligence on social media, Shiv Sena (UBT) Rajya Sabha MP Priyanka Chaturvedi has written to Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw, urging immediate intervention over the alleged abuse of X’s AI chatbot Grok to violate women’s privacy.
In her letter dated Friday, Chaturvedi flagged what she termed a “new trend” on X, where men are allegedly using the Grok AI feature to manipulate and sexualise photographs of women. She said fake accounts are being created to upload women’s photos and issue prompts instructing the chatbot to reduce clothing and generate sexualised images.
The MP pointed out that the alleged misuse extends beyond images uploaded through fake profiles and also affects women who share their own photographs on the platform.
“This is unacceptable and gross misuse of an AI function. What is worse is that Grok is enabling this behaviour by adhering to such requests. This is breach of women's right to privacy as well as unauthorised use of their pictures, which is not just unethical but also criminal,” Chaturvedi wrote.
Writing in her capacity as a member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information Technology and Communications, she urged the minister to take up the issue firmly with X and ensure that stronger safeguards are incorporated into AI systems. She stressed that digital platforms must be made safer for women and said India cannot afford to remain passive while women’s dignity is violated online “under the garb of creativity and innovation”.
Chaturvedi also highlighted that similar misuse patterns are emerging across other major technology platforms and remain largely unchecked. She emphasised that the matter must be treated as a priority to prevent women from being subjected to what she described as openly criminal practices and from being silenced or driven away from online spaces.
“Our country cannot be a bystander to women's dignity being violated publicly and digitally with zero consequences under the garb of creativity and innovation condone such prompts. ...As a nation, we must take this up on a priority to ensure women are not the victims of such openly criminal practices and further silence and push them out of these platforms,” she wrote.
In her letter, the MP added that while the use of artificial intelligence to simplify lives is welcome, the spread of demeaning and abusive practices against women cannot be tolerated. She expressed hope that the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology would engage with major technology companies on the issue and sought a response from the minister.
Copies of the letter were also sent to Nishikant Dubey, Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Communications and Information Technology, and S Krishnan, Secretary at the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.
