A 23-year-old woman was raped twice in a day in Odisha, first by her boyfriend and then a stranger who pretended to offer help. The horrific incident took place when the woman had gone to meet her boyfriend who asked her to meet at a temple, assuring her of marriage.
The victim's boyfriend allegedly took her to an isolated area, raped her and later abandoned her at the Rahama bus stand. The woman then waited at the bus stand, hoping to receive some help. However, to her utter distress another man who offered to help her took her to his rented accommodation and raped her again.
"The incident took place on February 22 after the woman left her house with plans to elope with her boyfriend, who had asked her to come to a temple by promising to marry her. However, he took her to a secluded place, raped her and abandoned her at Rahama bus stand," Jagatsinghpur Superintendent of Police Ankit Kumar Verma said.
The second accused, hailing from Jharkhand, took her to the roof of his rented accommodation at a place in Paradip town. After raping her, the man threw the woman from the roof of the building. The woman's body was discovered the following morning.
Police have arrested both the accused and booked them under various sections of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for kidnapping, rape and murder.
A case of unnatural death was filed on February 23 after the woman's body was recovered.
According to Jagatsinghpur SP, the victim's brother lodged a complaint at Paradip Model police station on February 25, alleging that his sister was raped and murdered on February 22.
Condemning the incident, Biju Janata Dal (BJD) supremo Naveen Patnaik demanded justice for the woman and other victims of recent rape incidents.
"How many more innocent lives will be lost? No one, including minors, is safe from the disabled. Is the rule of law in the state? The news of misdeeds coming from Kanihan in Angul, Kuchinda in Sambalpur and Paradip areas is disturbing," he wrote on X.
"While the government delivers long-winded speeches on women's safety and law and order, the ground reality is extremely alarming. Even in broad daylight, an atmosphere of fear prevails. Despite repeated instances of such deplorable incidents, the government's failure to take any exemplary, stringent action is emboldening the criminals. The government should take proactive steps to spread awareness on women's safety and ensure the rule of law is upheld in the state," the former CM added.
