The postmortem examination of Mukhtar Ansari, the jailed gangster-turned-politician who died after a cardiac arrest, was conducted at Banda Medical College and Hospital on March 29 afternoon. The body is now being taken to his native place Ghazipur.
The family is expected to move the Allahabad High Court, seeking parole for Ansari's son, Abbas, to attend the funeral, reports have said. Abbas is lodged in Kasganj jail. His son, Umar, has alleged that his father was poisoned in Banda Jail. Some political leaders have accused the Uttar Pradesh government for not providing adequate security to Ansari.
Here's what we know till now:
1. Mukhtar Ansari's post mortem was reportedly conducted by a panel of five doctors. The body was handed to the forensic team for the autopsy at the Banda Medical College Hospital.
2. Umar Ansari has alleged that his father was slow poisoned in the jail. His food was poisoned on March 19, which led to a cardiac arrest that proved fatal, Umar has claimed.
3. Last week, Mukhtar Ansari had submitted an application in the Barabanki court, saying he was given a "poisonous substance" with his food. The former five-time Mau Sadar MLA said he had pain in his abdomen and fell ill after consuming the food.
Mukhtar Ansari alleged that his “poisoning” on March 19 was part of a larger conspiracy against him. A similar incident had occurred in the past, he claimed.
4. His lawyer requested a medical board be set up to address his client’s health concerns, look into “poisoning” and treatment.
5. Several political leaders, including AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi and Samajwadi Party leader Ameeque Jamei have expressed grief over Mukhtar Ansari's death and demanded a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding it. Owaisi criticised the government for allegedly ignoring Ansari's claims of poisoning and inadequate medical treatment.
