Man gives 'triple talaq' to wife for going on a walk alone, booked

The Supreme Court in 2017 struck down triple talaq as unconstitutional and two year later Parliament declared the practice

In 2019, the Parliament of India declared the practice of Triple Talaq illegal and a punishable act.

A 31-year-old man was booked in Maharashtra after he allegedly divorced his wife through “triple talaq”, which is a criminal offence, for reportedly going alone for a walk.

According to news agency PTI, the man, a resident of Mumbra in Thane, on December 11 called his 25-year-old wife's father, saying he was annulling the marriage through “triple talaq” as the woman was going alone for a walk.

The man was booked for criminal intimidation and the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act on the woman’s complaint.

The Supreme Court in 2017 struck down as unconstitutional the Islamic practice of ending the marriage by uttering the talaq word thrice, saying it violated Muslim women's fundamental rights.  Two years later, Parliament declared the practice illegal and a punishable act.
