Updates: 45 Indians killed in Kuwait fire incident, authorities assure in-depth investigation

Kuwait said today that authorities had identified the bodies of 45 Indians and three Filipino nationals killed in a tragic fire in a building housing foreign workers, and the Gulf Kingdom promised to promptly investigate the incident and provide full support in repatriating the victims. On Wednesday, a fire broke out at the seven-story building where 196 migrant workers were sleeping in the southern city of Mangaf, killing at least 49 and injuring 50 more.

Updates: Indian Air Force's aircraft to retrieve dead bodies of fire incident victims

The Indian Air Force's C-130J Super Hercules transport aircraft is on standby at the Hindan airbase near Delhi to retrieve the bodies of Indian origin people who died in a fire in Kuwait, informed the Defence officials.

Giving more details on the Nagpur factory explosion, Nagpur Police Commissioner Ravinder Singhal said, "About 4-5 people died in this incident, including 4 women. Our investigation is ongoing. Our team, crime branch and senior officers are present on the spot, action is being taken."

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan remarked on the NEET-UG 2024 controversy and said, "Regarding the NEET issue, the Supreme Court made a decision today...This time when the exam was held, in 6 centres out of 4500 centres, the wrong question papers were sent mistakenly. The correct question paper was later provided but this took a little bit of time. Around 1,563 students were giving the exams in these centres and had to face time loss. Supreme Court's standing order says that instead of re-examination, grace marks are given. "

He further added saying, "NTA constituted an expert committee and applied the grace mark rule. Later it was found that some students got 100% marks. After this, some people went to the Court. Supreme Court gave a verdict that 1,563 students will be given the option to either reappear in the NEET exam or accept the original marks (without grace marks). I accept the verdict of the Supreme Court...Action will be taken on the people responsible for creating problems in the examination..."

The Kerala government said today that it will pay Rs 5 lakh in financial support to the families of state residents who died in the Kuwait fire catastrophe, which claimed 49 lives and injured 50 others. The cabinet also resolved to provide financial help of Rs one lakh to people hurt in the tragedy, according to the statement.

He stated, "It has been decided that the scorecards of 1,563 students will be cancelled and they will be given an option to reattempt the exam on June 23. If some students do not wish to give the test again, then grace marks will be deducted from their current score and that will be their final score."

Gogoi highlighted the absence of government action on what he referred to as a "larger scam" surrounding the issue.

Following today's hearing, it has been decided that the scorecards of the 1,563 affected candidates issued on June 4, 2024, will be nullified. These candidates will now receive their actual scores without any additional marks.

Additionally, a retest will be conducted for these 1,563 candidates. Those who choose not to participate in the re-exam will have their results declared based on their original marks obtained in the May 5, 2024, examination, without any compensatory marks. However, candidates opting for the retest will have their scores from the May 5 exam disregarded, and their marks from the retest will be considered for final evaluation.

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan addressed allegations regarding NEET-UG, stating, "There is no evidence of paper leak in NEET-UG. The allegations of corruption in NTA are unfounded, it is a very credible body." He assured reporters, "The Supreme Court is hearing the matter and we will abide by its decision. We will ensure no student is at a disadvantage."

Regarding the controversy, the Centre informed the Supreme Court that the decision to grant grace marks to 1,563 NEET-UG 2024 candidates has been revoked. These candidates will now have the option to re-test on June 23. Alternatively, if they choose not to participate in the re-test, their results will be based on their original marks, excluding the grace marks.

Following an investigation into alleged paper leaks and unfair examination practices, the Supreme Court has announced that 1563 affected candidates will have the opportunity for a re-examination. These candidates will receive their actual scores without any compensatory marks. Additionally, candidates who choose not to participate in the re-examination will have their results declared based on their actual marks.

Hiten Singh Kashyap and Palak Mittal, two candidates of NEET-UG 2024, have filed a petition with the Supreme Court, alleging unfair examination practices. They contend that the exam was marred by widespread question paper leaks and misappropriation before and during the examination.

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has issued a statement addressing concerns raised by NEET-UG 2024 candidates regarding alleged loss of time during the May 5 exam. According to the NTA, candidates affected by these issues were compensated with grace marks, aligning with a normalisation formula endorsed by the Supreme Court in a 2018 judgment. As a result, impacted candidates' marks could range from 718 to 719.

The Supreme Court has reiterated that it will not stay the counselling process for NEET-UG 2024. In a clear directive, the Court stated, "Counselling will go on and we will not stop it. If the exam goes then everything goes in totality so nothing to fear."

Teams of Delhi Jal Board and ADMs and SDMs have been deployed for patrolling. Today, I have come here with officers to ensure that there's no wastage of water being done by the government or Delhi Jal Board amid the crisis," said Atishi during her visit to a reservoir at Akshardham to inspect the water distribution system.

The Kerala government has convened an emergency Cabinet meeting, chaired by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, starting at 10 AM this morning. The meeting is focused on discussing the repatriation of bodies of the victims and determining if any ministers need to travel to Kuwait to coordinate relief efforts.

Before departing for Kuwait from Delhi Airport, Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh addressed the tragic fire incident in Mangaf, Kuwait, which has claimed the lives of around 48-49 individuals, including 42-43 Indians. Singh stated, "We had a meeting with the Prime Minister last evening... The situation will become clear once we arrive there... The victims are mostly suffering from burns, and some bodies are charred beyond recognition. DNA tests are being conducted to identify them."

Singh added, "An Air Force plane is on standby. Once the identifications are complete, the families will be notified, and the Air Force plane will transport the bodies back." The government is taking all necessary measures to manage the situation and provide support to the affected families.

A tragic fire at a labor housing facility in Mangaf, Kuwait, has claimed the lives of around 40 Indians, including three individuals from Kerala's Kollam district. The incident has left over 50 people injured, who are currently being treated in five government hospitals in Kuwait.

The deceased include:

- Lucose (48): A long-time supervisor at NBTC Company, Lucose is survived by his wife, Shiny, and their two children, Lydia and Lois.
- Sajan George (29): A recent M.Tech graduate working as a junior mechanical engineer.
- Shameer (30): A resident of Sooranad village.

Five people were killed and two injured when a fire broke out in a residential building in Behta Hajipur under the Loni Border police station area, police reported on Thursday.

It is suspected that a short circuit caused the fire. Information about the fire was received on the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday. Police personnel and firefighters rushed to the scene, rescuing a woman and a child from the building, according to Additional Commissioner of Police (ACP) Ankur Vihar Bhaskar Verma.

Preliminary investigation suggests the fire started on the ground floor and quickly spread to the first and second floors, trapping residents. The spread of the fire was exacerbated by foam kept in the house, said Additional Police Commissioner Dinesh Kumar P.

The deceased have been identified as Saiful Rehman (35), his wife Nazira (32), daughter Isra (7), Faiz (7 months), and Farheen alias Parveen (25). The injured, Arsh (10) and Uzma (25), were admitted to GTB Hospital in Delhi, with Arsh later being discharged.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported an intensified heatwave in Delhi, with Safdarjung recording temperatures as high as 44.7 degrees Celsius, five degrees above normal. The city is experiencing dry and warm westerly winds from Rajasthan and south Haryana, contributing to the elevated temperatures under clear skies.

According to IMD data, the last time Safdarjung recorded a higher number of heatwave days in June was in 2014, with seven such days. Notably, June 2019 also saw three heatwave days. The current heatwave spell is expected to persist for the next six days, with maximum temperatures likely to hover around 45 degrees Celsius at most stations.

IMD has issued an ‘orange’ alert for Thursday and a ‘yellow’ alert from June 14 to 18 for heatwave conditions. The weather department defines a heatwave day when the maximum temperature is 4.5 degrees or more above normal, reaching at least 40 degrees Celsius. A ‘severe’ heatwave is declared when temperatures are 6.5 degrees or more above normal, or when the maximum temperature exceeds 47 degrees Celsius.

Following the tragic fire incident in Mangaf area that resulted in at least 49 fatalities, Kuwait's authorities have ramped up inspections. According to Arab Times Kuwait, the municipality's Engineering Audit and Follow-up Department in the Farwaniya Governorate has closed down seven basements and issued 13 violations across several buildings.

On Thursday, MoS Kirti Vardhan Singh addressed the "unfortunate" incident in Kuwait, stating, "All of us, including the PM, are very concerned. I am going there to assess the situation. Our embassy personnel are already on the ground looking after the injured... I will inform the government regarding the conditions there... DNA testing is being carried out to identify the bodies, which might take some time. The Air Force plane is ready. As soon as the bodies are identified, they will be brought to India..."

Before departing for Kuwait from Delhi Airport, Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh stated, "We had a meeting last evening with the PM... The situation will be cleared the moment we reach there... The victims are mostly burn victims, and some bodies have been charred beyond recognition. A DNA test is underway to identify the victims. An Air Force plane is on the ready. As soon as the bodies are identified, the kin will be informed, and our Air Force plane will bring the bodies back..."

The fire originated in a kitchen of a six-storey building in the Mangaf area of Kuwait's southern Ahmadi Governorate. The building, which housed nearly 200 workers from the same company, saw a tragic loss of life. According to Maj Gen Eid Al-Owaihan, Director General of the Forensic Department, the death toll has exceeded 35, with four individuals succumbing to their injuries in hospitals. The majority of the deceased were Indian nationals from Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and northern Indian states, ranging in age from 20 to 50 years.
