India News LIVE: Five killed in Ghaziabad residential building fire

Five people were killed and two injured when a fire broke out in a residential building in Behta Hajipur under the Loni Border police station area, police reported on Thursday.

It is suspected that a short circuit caused the fire. Information about the fire was received on the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday. Police personnel and firefighters rushed to the scene, rescuing a woman and a child from the building, according to Additional Commissioner of Police (ACP) Ankur Vihar Bhaskar Verma.

Preliminary investigation suggests the fire started on the ground floor and quickly spread to the first and second floors, trapping residents. The spread of the fire was exacerbated by foam kept in the house, said Additional Police Commissioner Dinesh Kumar P.

The deceased have been identified as Saiful Rehman (35), his wife Nazira (32), daughter Isra (7), Faiz (7 months), and Farheen alias Parveen (25). The injured, Arsh (10) and Uzma (25), were admitted to GTB Hospital in Delhi, with Arsh later being discharged.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported an intensified heatwave in Delhi, with Safdarjung recording temperatures as high as 44.7 degrees Celsius, five degrees above normal. The city is experiencing dry and warm westerly winds from Rajasthan and south Haryana, contributing to the elevated temperatures under clear skies.

According to IMD data, the last time Safdarjung recorded a higher number of heatwave days in June was in 2014, with seven such days. Notably, June 2019 also saw three heatwave days. The current heatwave spell is expected to persist for the next six days, with maximum temperatures likely to hover around 45 degrees Celsius at most stations.

IMD has issued an ‘orange’ alert for Thursday and a ‘yellow’ alert from June 14 to 18 for heatwave conditions. The weather department defines a heatwave day when the maximum temperature is 4.5 degrees or more above normal, reaching at least 40 degrees Celsius. A ‘severe’ heatwave is declared when temperatures are 6.5 degrees or more above normal, or when the maximum temperature exceeds 47 degrees Celsius.
