Two days after three minor sisters jumped to their deaths from the ninth floor of their residential building in Ghaziabad, police have now said that they have ruled out any foul play after the autopsy was conducted.
According to a report by the Times of India, the police said, “It revealed the cause of death as shock and haemorrhage due to ante-mortem injuries. According to the autopsy, no other injury was found on the girls’ bodies. So, we have ruled out any foul play.
Police investigating the deaths of three girls said their increasing withdrawal from the outside world and intense fixation on Korean popular culture appeared to be significant factors, based on statements from family members and preliminary findings.
According to an officer, around six months ago the girls’ father, Chetan Kumar, purchased two mobile phones for his eldest daughter, aged 16, and her 14 year old half sister, hoping they could “become famous like other YouTubers”. Over time, however, the sisters’ fascination with Korea intensified and they repeatedly urged their debt ridden father to take them there, prompting him to confiscate both phones.
Police said Kumar sold one phone about three months ago and the second a few weeks ago. Around 10 days earlier, the girls were also asked to delete their YouTube channel from one of their parents’ phones. Kumar told the police he could not recall the channel’s name.
“They listened to Korean music, watched Korean films, dramas, web series and cartoons. They also wanted to go to Korea. All three girls wanted us to accept Korean culture. But when we refused, their behaviour towards us changed and they went into a shell. They lived in their own world,” Kumar told investigators.
Officers said the three sisters had grown up with very limited social interaction and had no close friends. Since the Covid pandemic, they had stopped attending school and were not receiving home tuition either. Police believe this prolonged isolation deepened their reliance on one another and on an imagined online life. Messages written on the wall of their room, including “my life is very very alone”, pointed to their sense of loneliness.
On Tuesday night, around 10 pm, the girls spoke briefly with their father before going to their room. “I asked them if they had dinner, they said yes. They insisted on going to Korea again, but I told them that we are Indians and should behave like one instead of adopting a foreign culture,” Kumar said.
Investigators also noted that the sisters had begun dressing and styling their hair in a Korean manner. They used imagery from the web series Squid Game and set phone wallpapers showing themselves in Korean outfits.
“After our conversation ended, they took my wife’s phone and used it till midnight. Around 2am, they woke up and went to the puja room, where they locked the door and jumped from the window,” Kumar added.
When police forced open the door of the puja room, they found photographs of the girls scattered on the floor along with a note addressed to their father that read “READ NOW”.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (trans Hindon) Nimish Patil said a special team has been tasked with tracing the two phones that Kumar sold. “Once the phones are recovered, we will send them to a forensic team to examine,” he said.
