Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi on Wednesday hit out at Bhupen Borah, questioning his decision to move to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) soon after resigning and claiming that recent developments have confirmed the party’s long-held concerns about internal leaks.

Responding to Borah’s remarks and his expected entry into the BJP, Gogoi said Congress leaders had earlier been disturbed by how confidential party discussions were allegedly finding their way to those close to chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

“We always wondered how confidential details of our meetings were leaked to a particular journalist linked to Himanta Biswa Sarma. We tried our best not to believe in these rumours and speculation, but now these rumours have come to light, and it is true," Gogoi was quoted in a CNN-News18 report.

He further targeted Borah over quickly aligning with the BJP leadership after quitting from the Congress while also dismissing his criticism of the party as a justification for switching sides.

“All of this is just an excuse to join the BJP. When someone joins the BJP, they are given a script, and they have to read that script," he said.

Earlier, Borah claimed that the opposition party's state unit is no longer under the control of Gaurav Gogoi, and Dhubri MP Rakibul Hussain is its "sole base".

In an interview to PTI-Video, Borah claimed Gogoi, the state Congress president, is just "the mere face of the party now".

"Rakibul Hussain, who had won the Dhubri seat by over 10 lakh votes, is the sole base of the party," he claimed.

Borah said that after he sent his resignation letter to the Congress high command on Monday, Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi called him and spoke at length about the "relationship we shared since 2007".

"He mentioned how we helped the party grow, and he helped me over the years, which is true, but he did not say a word about my resignation letter," he claimed.

Chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that Borah would be joining the BJP on February 22, after meeting him at his residence on Tuesday evening.
