Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s ruling coalition secured a sweeping victory in Sunday’s snap general elections, handing her a powerful mandate to implement bold economic and security policies just months into her premiership.
The landslide consolidates her control of the lower house and gives her significant legislative leverage to pursue her agenda amid a volatile regional landscape.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi immediately congratulated Takaichi, saying he looked forward to taking the India-Japan partnership “to greater heights.”
Congratulations Sanae Takaichi on your landmark victory in the elections to the House of Representatives! Our Special Strategic and Global Partnership plays a vital role in enhancing… — Narendra Modi (@narendramodi) February 8, 2026
Modi posted on X that the two countries’ “Special Strategic and Global Partnership plays a vital role in enhancing global peace, stability and prosperity,” and expressed confidence that under her leadership, the friendship would continue to deepen.
Takaichi became Japan’s first female prime minister earlier and has charted a course that mixes economic stimulus, tax reform and a stronger security posture amid rising regional tensions, particularly involving China. Her victory comes as Japan’s voters endorsed her conservative platform despite economic headwinds and geopolitical uncertainties.
Impact on India-Japan strategic ties
The election outcome matters to New Delhi because of the depth and breadth of India-Japan relations, which are anchored in shared democratic values, civilisational links and a mutual interest in a free and open Indo-Pacific.
Under the “Special Strategic and Global Partnership,” the two sides have steadily expanded cooperation in defence, infrastructure, technology and economic security over the past decade.
Defence cooperation has included joint maritime exercises and participation in multilateral frameworks such as the Quad — a strategic dialogue that also brings in the United States and Australia — aimed at ensuring stability in the broader region.
Indian officials have repeatedly described Japan as a “natural partner” in India’s quest for peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific.
Economic and technological links have grown, too. Japan is one of India’s top investors and has helped finance major infrastructure initiatives, including metro systems and the Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail project.
Collaboration in semiconductors, critical minerals and digital infrastructure has become a new focus under recent economic security dialogues.
Takaichi and Modi have already signalled an intention to deepen cooperation. In their first talks after she took office, both leaders reaffirmed a shared vision for the bilateral partnership, emphasising peace, stability and prosperity across the region and underscoring the importance of advancing joint economic and security projects.
Looking ahead
Analysts say Takaichi’s victory gives her stronger leverage to shape both domestic policy and foreign engagements, including closer alignment with India on strategic initiatives.
With Japan and India continuing to coordinate economic and defence efforts, the election outcome is likely to bolster New Delhi’s role in regional diplomacy and security architecture, even as both nations navigate competing economic pressures and geopolitical challenges.
