The family of 25-year-old Kamal Dhyani was waiting for him to return home late Thursday night to begin preparations for his parents’ wedding anniversary celebration. A cake and candles had been arranged, but the celebration never took place. Instead, the night ended in tragedy when Kamal was found dead hours later.

Kamal, a call centre employee, had spoken to his twin brother Karan at 12.50 am on Friday, telling him he would be home in 15 minutes. He also asked his mother to make chapatis and said he was on his way. That phone call was the last time the family heard from him.

When Kamal failed to return and stopped answering calls, his family became worried and stepped out to search for him. They first went to his workplace in Rohini, where they were told he had already left. The family then spent the night visiting multiple police stations and searching empty roads, hoping to spot his motorcycle. Hours passed without any information.

By morning, police informed the family that Kamal had been found dead. His body, with his helmet still on, and his motorcycle were discovered inside a 15-foot-deep pit in Janakpuri. The trench had been dug as part of a sewer pipeline rehabilitation project by the Delhi Jal Board. Police said Kamal had fallen into the open pit while riding home.

The motorcycle found at the spot was one Kamal had bought with his own savings as a birthday gift for himself. Friends described him as quiet, hardworking and deeply focused on supporting his family.

The news left the family shattered. Kamal’s father had spent the entire night searching for him. His mother was informed later, as the family feared the impact of the news on her health.

“We told our mother much later," Karan said, India Today reported. “She wouldn’t have survived hearing it suddenly. Our father had been searching all night. In the morning, he had to see his son’s body wrapped in a bag," he added.

The anniversary celebration never took place. Decorations were not put up, the cake remained untouched and the house fell silent. Kamal lived with his parents and brothers in Kailashpuri. His father and elder brother are priests, while his twin brother is preparing for the Chartered Accountant examination.
