Fugitive diamond merchant Mehul Choksi was not alone in cheating Indian banks and laundering thousands of crores. His son Rohan Choksi was “actively” involved as well, the enforcement directorate has claimed for the first time, a report by the Hindustan Times said on January 16.
Mehul Choksi is currently facing extradition proceedings in Belgium, where he took shelter after allegedly defrauding Indian banks.
The agency’s legal representatives made the submission before the appellate tribunal for forfeited property (ATFP) in Delhi while contesting a petition filed by Rohan Choksi against the attachment of a Mumbai property in 2018. Rohan Choksi has maintained that the property was acquired by a family trust in 1994.
The Enforcement Directorate, however, told the tribunal that the asset was transferred by Mehul Choksi to Rohan Choksi in 2013, describing the move as deliberate and aimed at shielding the property ahead of potential attachments if the alleged fraud came to light.
Notably, Rohan Choksi has not been named in any FIRs or charge sheets filed by either the Enforcement Directorate or the Central Bureau of Investigation. Individuals familiar with the family, who requested anonymity, told HT that Rohan Choksi had long separated his business interests from his father and is no longer in contact with him. His current location remains undisclosed, with those close to the family declining to share details, citing that he is neither a wanted individual nor an accused in any case.
