Trinamool Congress leader Jayprakash Majumdar spoke about the ongoing violence in Bangladesh and slammed the Bharatiya Janata Party of comparing West Bengal with the neighbouring state.

"BJP comparing West Bengal with Bangladesh is preposterous, and demeaning India as a whole," TMC leader Jayprakash Majumdar said.

"They are bringing Bangladesh in the internal politics," he said, adding that West Bengal is an Indian state and should not be compared to Bangladesh.

"It is a mean way of doing politics by these small leaders of BJP," Majumdar further said. "This is no way of doing politics, you should not go beyond one particular level. You are looking for power...that does not mean you will go down to such a level," he added.

He also accused BJP of "trying to divide the Bengali society along the lines of religion".

Meanwhile, West Bengal BJP tweeted, "Bangladesh. A land where Music is Haraam and Women Hide their faces."

"Bengalis beware, these are not isolated incidents in a faraway land. This is right next door, and just a few kilometres away from our homes! There is already a growing trend of radicalisation in West Bengal under the regime of Mamata Banerjee, and such incidents will happen if radicalisation continues due to appeasement politics," the tweet added.

The Bangladesh interim government led by Muhammad Yunus on Friday issued its first formal response to the ongoing unrest, urging citizens to resist mob violence and maintain calm.

It blamed a small group of fringe elements for fuelling the disturbances and said it “strongly and unequivocally” condemns violence, intimidation, arson and destruction of property, warning that such acts could derail the country’s democratic process.
