In a shocking case of child abuse from Maharashtra's Nagpur, police have rescued a 12-year-old child after he was subjected to abuse for two months and had injury marks after he was chained by his parents.
News reports say that the child was chained as part of punishment after he allegedly stole mobile phones repeatedly. He was also made to drop out of school and the punishment was on a daily basis.
The child was rescued on Friday after the Women and Child Development Department of the Maharashtra government and the Nagpur Police got information with regards to the case.
The child, whose parents are daily wage labourers, has been shifted to a government-run children's home and is currently undergoing counselling and medical treatment, reports have said.
The local residents in the area where the child was confined contacted the police and then the District Child Protection Unit (DCPU) formed a team that raided the house where he was kept.
The boy was found confined inside the house, police said, adding that he was in distress and was also terrified when the authorities found him. He was also allegedly standing on a bucket due to lack of space.
Reports also said that he had chains and padlocks on his legs and also had injury marks that looked from chains and ropes.
"It was shocking to see such inhuman punishment being inflicted on such a young child,” District Child Protection Officer Mushtak Pathan called the punishment inhuman said, calling the punishment 'inhuman'.
The child also showed signs of physical as well as mental trauma. The parents subjected the child to the abuse because he misbehaved, would run away from home and stole mobile phones after disobeying them. The parents have reportedly said that they wanted to control his 'misbehaviour' by punishing him like this.
