Jagat Prakash Nadda, the BJP national president, resigned as a Rajya Sabha member on Monday, sparking rumours that he may run in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections. His resignation was approved by the Rajya Sabha Chairman.
"Jagat Prakash Nadda, an elected Member of the Council of States (Rajya Sabha), representing the State of Himachal Pradesh, resigned his seat in the Rajya Sabha and his resignation has been accepted by the Chairman, Rajya Sabha w.e.f. 4th March, 2024," stated the official statement from the Rajya Sabha.
Another leader, famed Bhojpuri singer Pawan Singh, withdrew from the Lok Sabha contest the day after being declared the BJP's candidate in Bengal's Asansol constituency. The singer revealed on his official X account(formerly known as Twitter) that he was withdrawing from the contest "due to some reason."
This comes only days after Nadda and three other BJP nominees—Jasvantsinh Parmar, Mayank Nayak, and diamond baron Govindbhai Dholakia—were proclaimed winners in Gujarat in the Rajya Sabha elections on February 20. Nadda was elected unopposed.
The BJP moved ahead of its competitors on Saturday by releasing its initial list of 195 candidates for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. The list featured 47 young candidates, 28 women, 27 Scheduled Caste (SC) candidates, 18 Scheduled Tribes (ST) candidates, and 57 OBC/Backward Class nominees.
