As many as 15 flights were delayed, and six were diverted at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) due to poor visibility caused by dense fog on Sunday morning.
Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) officials said that flight operations were impacted by low visibility between 5:08 am and 7:25 am.
Six incoming flights were diverted to Chennai and Hyderabad airports. These included Akasa Air from Mumbai, SpiceJet from New Delhi, and Air India from Mumbai and Abu Dhabi, all diverted to Chennai. Additionally, an IndiGo flight from Hyderabad and a cargo flight from Delhi were diverted to Hyderabad.
According to IMD officials, visibility at KIA ranged between 50 to 100 meters, classified as dense fog.
In December 2020, KIA's south runway became compliant with CAT-IIIB operations, a navigation system that enables aircraft to land in low-visibility conditions. However, the north runway remains a CAT I runway, though upgrade work is on.
