A 22-year-old woman was allegedly murdered by her live-in partner in Andhra Pradesh’s Ambedkar Konaseema district after she refused to engage in prostitution, India Today reported, citing police sources.

The incident took place on Wednesday night in Siddhartha Nagar of B Savaram village, located under Rajolu mandal. The victim, Oleti Pushpa, had been living with Sheikh Shamma, also 22, for the past six months after separating from her husband. The couple had rented a house in the village, the India Today report added.

According to the police, Shamma had recently started suspecting Pushpa of having affairs with other men. He reportedly pressured her into prostitution and frequently picked fights with her while under the influence of alcohol.

Around 10 pm on Wednesday, a heated argument broke out when Shamma once again insisted that Pushpa accompany him for sex work. When she refused, he allegedly attacked her with a knife, stabbing her in the chest and leg.

Pushpa’s mother, Ganga, and her brother, who tried to intervene, were also injured in the attack. Pushpa succumbed to her injuries at the scene due to excessive bleeding.

Rajolu Circle Inspector Naresh Kumar confirmed that a case has been registered. Two police teams have been formed to track down the accused, who is currently on the run.
