The recorder has received severe external damages that has made it difficult for the local investigators to extract data, the newspaper said citing sources.

Air India crash: Black box found — What is it and how it can help unravel the mystery behind tragedy

It will now be sent to the National Safety Transport Board’s laboratory in Washington for analysis and the findings will be shared with India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau, ET said.

Local authorities had recovered the second black box from the crash site on June 16. The crucial recovery of the cockpit voice recorder and the flight data recorder, which was found last week, will help find the reasons for the crash that killed 241 out of the 242 on board and several others on the ground.
