US travel ban now covers 39 countries: Here's the full and partial restrictions list

This marks the third travel ban imposed by Trump, following a similar order in 2017 that faced protests and legal challenges but was ultimately upheld by the US Supreme Court.

The White House said the expansion is aimed at protecting US national security and will take effect from January 1.

President Donald Trump, early Wednesday, signed a proclamation significantly expanding the US travel ban, increasing the number of countries with full or partial entry restrictions from 19 to 39.

The move adds seven new countries to the full ban list and imposes partial restrictions on 15 others, citing “severe deficiencies in screening, vetting, and information-sharing” as justification.

The White House said the expansion is aimed at protecting US national security and will take effect from January 1. Exceptions apply for lawful permanent residents, existing visa holders, certain visa categories, diplomats, and travelers whose entry serves US national interests. Case-by-case waivers will also be available.

The following countries now face full travel restrictions:
  • Afghanistan
  • Burkina Faso
  • Burma (Myanmar)
  • Chad
  • Equatorial Guinea
  • Eritrea
  • Haiti
  • Iran
  • Laos
  • Libya
  • Mali
  • Niger
  • Republic of the Congo
  • Sierra Leone
  • Somalia
  • South Sudan
  • Sudan
  • Syria
  • Yemen
  • Individuals holding Palestinian Authority-issued travel documents are also barred under the full-entry restrictions.
The following countries are subject to partial travel restrictions:
  • Angola
  • Antigua and Barbuda
  • Benin
  • Burundi
  • Côte d’Ivoire
  • Cuba
  • Dominica
  • Gabon
  • The Gambia
  • Malawi
  • Mauritania
  • Nigeria
  • Senegal
  • Tanzania
  • Togo
  • Tonga
  • Venezuela
  • Zambia
  • Zimbabwe
Special Case
  • Turkmenistan: Restrictions remain for immigrants, but have been lifted for non-immigrant visas.

The White House cited factors including high visa overstay rates, unreliable civil records, corruption, terrorist activity, and lack of cooperation in accepting deported nationals as reasons for the expanded restrictions.

This marks the third travel ban imposed by Trump, following a similar order in 2017 that faced protests and legal challenges but was ultimately upheld by the US Supreme Court.

The administration stated that restrictions will remain in place until affected countries demonstrate “credible improvements” in identity management, information-sharing, and cooperation with US immigration authorities.
