U.S. President Donald Trump has announced plans for a new initiative that would offer financial support to undocumented immigrants who choose to leave the country voluntarily.
In an interview aired Tuesday on Fox Noticias, Trump described the proposal as a "self-deportation program" that would involve providing stipends and the option to return to the U.S. legally at a later time.
“We're going to give them a stipend,” Trump told Rachel Campos-Duffy, according to the official transcript of Monday’s taped interview. “We're going to give them some money and a plane ticket, and then we're going to work with them. If they're good, if we want them back in, we're going to work with them to get them back in as quickly as we can.”
A White House spokesperson declined to elaborate, stating there was nothing to add to Trump's remarks.
Trump, a Republican, has made mass deportations a key focus of his immigration policy and has pushed legal boundaries to increase enforcement. His administration has also encouraged undocumented immigrants to assist in their own removal process, including through the use of a U.S. Customs and Border Protection app, CBP Home, which allows users to declare an "intent to depart."
