The All India Consumer Products Distributors Federation (AICPDF) has raised serious concerns over an emerging practice where fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) companies are allegedly using e-commerce and quick commerce platforms as outlets to dump near-expiry and slow-moving products.
According to AICPDF, this trend threatens not only the stability of small and medium retail businesses but also consumer safety, as it often lacks proper transparency and regulation.
In a recent statement, AICPDF appealed to the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, warning that these e-commerce platforms are becoming convenient "dumping grounds" for products approaching their expiration dates.
Companies reportedly entice consumers with significant discounts on such products, creating an impression of value while unloading stock that may be unsafe or of lesser quality. AICPDF claims this is especially concerning for consumable goods, where near-expiry items can pose health risks if used unknowingly.
This notice follows AICPDF's recent complaint to the Competition Commission of India, accusing quick commerce players Blinkit, Swiggy, and Zepto of predatory pricing.
In the recent note, the federation outlined key issues, including the lack of clear labeling on near-expiry products sold online and the adverse impact on traditional retailers who struggle to compete with the deeply discounted rates. "This practice disrupts the retail market and jeopardizes the livelihoods of small and medium retailers," said AICPDF representatives.
To address these challenges, AICPDF has urged the Ministry of Consumer Affairs to implement regulatory frameworks mandating clear expiry labeling on quick and e-commerce platforms, helping consumers make informed decisions. Additionally, the federation has called for policies to protect brick-and-mortar retailers from unfair competition and to foster a balanced retail ecosystem.
AICPDF also advised consumers to check the manufacturing and expiration dates of products upon receiving deliveries. This, they emphasized, is essential for safeguarding consumer health and promoting fair practices in the rapidly evolving digital marketplace.
