Modi is scheduled to meetCEOs, Nobel laureates, economists, artists, scientists, scholars, entrepreneurs, academicians, health sector experts in the city later in the day. India and the US are discussing ways to resolve six trade disputes bilaterally, without going through the mechanism of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), an official source said on Tuesday. These discussions assume significance as Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a three-day visit to the US from June 21-24 at the invitation of US President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden. The source, who is aware of the discussions, said that there are six trade disputes for which talks are going on and positive outcomes are expected.
A Pakistani court on Tuesday issued non-bailable warrants for the arrest of former prime minister Imran Khan in two cases related to arson attacks during the May 9 violence which erupted following his arrest in a corruption case. Lahore police on May 10 registered two FIRs against Khan and other Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI ) party leaders on charges of attacking and torching a ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party office and a container.

India's cabinet has approved a $2.7 billion plan by Micron Technology to set up a semiconductor testing and packaging unit ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the U.S. this week, a senior government source told Reuters. Micron's plant is set to be built in Modi's home state of Gujarat and the government will dole out production-linked incentives worth 110 billion rupees ($1.34 billion), the Indian official added. He declined to be identified ahead of a planned announcement during Modi's U.S. trip.
Leading stock exchange NSE and its arm NSE Clearing Ltd (NCL) on Tuesday settled the trading glitch case with markets regulator Sebi after paying a settlement amount of over Rs 72 crore. Individually, the National Stock Exchange (NSE) paid a total of Rs 49.77 crore and NCL doled out Rs 22.88 crore to settle the case that occurred in 2021, according to a settlement order. Trading was halted at the NSE for nearly four hours on February 24, 2021, reportedly due to telecom links failure leading to the unavailability of the online risk management system of NCL.
Amid concerns that the amended adoption rules that make district magistrates instead of courts responsible for issuing adoption orders would lead to high pendency, a senior official said just 139 cases are pending with DMs and the number reduced from 997 in last September when the changes came into force. The official also said that a total of 2,297 adoption orders have been issued since the amended rules came into force. Out of 997 adoption cases pending as on September 2022, 858 adoption orders have been issued and, as on June 20, the pendency is 139, a senior official said Among states, Maharashtra has the highest number of adoption cases. According to official data, 174 cases were pending in September last year in Maharashtra and now the number stands at 35.
Retail inflation for farm workers and rural labourers eased to 5.99 per cent and 5.84 per cent, respectively, in May. Point-to-point rate of inflation based on the CPI-AL (consumer price index-agricultural labourers and CPI-RL (rural labourers) stood at 6.50 per cent and 6.52 per cent respectively in April 2023 and 6.67 per cent and 7.00 per cent respectively during the corresponding month (May 2022) of the previous year, a labour bureau statement said.
Six new coronavirus cases were reported in Mumbai on Tuesday, taking the tally of infections to 11,63,919, an official from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said. As per the civic body's health bulletin, the toll remained unchanged at 19,773, while the count of recoveries reached 11,44,112 after eight patients recovered during the day. The city did not record a single new case on Monday, for the first time since February.
