They have been calling it 'The Audacity of Note'. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's boldness in ordering high-denomination currency sucked out of the system to checkmate black money has received approbation from the common man and the rich alike.
But, surprisingly, for a regime known for its attention to detail – the PM selects the photos which his handlers circulate, for example – the design of the notes leaves much to be desired. The new Rs 2000 note jars even more when contrasted with the eye-grabbing visual props of a project like Swachch Bharat, whose logo, incidentally, is emblazoned on the new currency.
India under Modi has big global aspirations. An attractive currency, the most potent and visible symbol of a country's financial muscle, would have been helpful in projecting the country’s newfound go-getter attitude.
