A day after a panel of MP's suggested changes to the proposed land law, the BJP's Sumitra Mahajan, who chairs the standing committeee on rural development,  told CNBC-TV18 that the proposals were not regressive and instead balanced the needs of industry and farmers among others.

But, the government's reaction was more strident with both Commerce Minister Anand Sharma and rural development minister Jairam Ramesh panning the standing committee report.

“Today the overriding priority of our country is to revive the momentum of eco growth and the land bill that will come in the monsoon session, will be a bill that will help in reviving economic growth, restoring economic growth and not depressing investor sentiment,” Ramesh said.

According to Sharma, states have a role to play when it comes to zoning of the land for the industrial manufacturing zones or the industrial clusters. “Why should states not be doing that, when they are more than willing to move forward in this filed. This is entirely the discretion of the states. At the same time when these zones are created that is where both public and private investments come in.
