If buzz from within the DMK is to be believed, Tamil CM MK Stalin's son Udhayanidhi Stalin is set to become the deputy chief minister of the state. Udhayanidhi, however, has played down the deputy CM talks, saying all ministers act like deputies of the chief minister.
He also said that only CM Stalin had the final authority to decide on his elevation.
“Decision rests with our chief minister. In fact, all our ministers are deputies to him,” Udhayanidhi Stalin told reporters on Wednesday on the sidelines of a Periyar anniversary lecture in Chennai.
On Tuesday, after Tamil Nadu ministers and DMK functionaries accompanied Stalin for a meeting, social media and party office was rife with speculation about an impending announcement regarding Udhayanidhi’s elevation.
However, there was no announcement made, disappointing party cadres and supporters.
Udhayanidhi was made minister of youth welfare and sports development in his father’s Cabinet in December 2022, a year after he won from the Chepauk-Thiruvallikeni Assembly constituency. He had played a crucial role in the 2021 Assembly election which ended the decade of AIADMK rule in the state.
Party cadres and leaders have been calling for Udhayanidhi’s elevation as deputy chief minister ahead of the 2026 assembly elections.
