An animal rights body asked online websites, including OLX and Quikr, to "disallow" any advertisements for the sale of dogs, after the Centre recently imposed a ban on import of dogs for breeding or any other commercial activity.

The Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) had recently come out with a notification saying import of commercial dogs for breeding or any other commercial activity is not permitted in the country.

"Allowing breeders to advertise would encourage the illegal activity of selling puppies, whether imported in violation of the ban or in violation of the afore mentioned Rules.

"Hence, we strongly recommend that you disallow any and all advertisements for the sale of dogs on your website so as to ensure compliance with this order," a Humane Society International-India statement said.
