State-owned Punjab State Power Corporation (PSPCL) would set up 1,320-MW thermal power project at Mukerian.

This was disclosed by PSEB Engineers Association, President HS Bedi.

The Association had a meeting with PSPCL management where it was informed that PSPCL had identified two sites near Mukerian for setting up a new plant and a formal announcement by Punjab Government was expected shortly in this regard.

PSPCL assured the Association that government is favourably inclined to set up plant under state sector for which formal approval is expected.

Engineers were agitating at the policy of the Punjab government to hand over all its future thermal projects to private players and totally ignoring the need to set up plants under public sector to ensure affordable power to the consumers.

Bhupinder Singh General Secretary of Association said the other major demand of the Association was recruitment of engineers on regular basis and not on contract for three years with fixed pay.
