Coal India (CIL) evacuated about 10 million tonne (MT) of coal from its pithead in the April-June quarter of the current financial year, the government said today.

"...during the period, April to June 2011, CIL (was)...able to liquidate 9.73 million tonne," Coal Minister Sriprakash Jaiswal said in a written reply in Lok Sabha. As on March 31, 2011, 69.17 million tonne of coal was accumulated on the pithead of the maharatna firm, the minister said.

Jaiswal also informed Parliament that the public sector firm had equipped itself with machinery to liquidate 25 million tonne of dry fuel from pithead this fiscal.

"For this purpose, CIL has taken up the issue of increasing coal dispatch by rail during the current year with the Railways through the forum of Rail Coal Interface and the Railways have agreed to supply more rakes to facilitate higher offtake of coal," the minister said. Last month, Coal India had said that it was planning to evacuate 25 million tonne of coal from inventory this fiscal and had sought adequate rakes from the Railways for the purpose.

The stock has been accumulating over a decade on account of inadequate transportation facilities, mainly due to shortage of railway rakes. CIL, which on an average requires 190 rakes per day, had received 177.4 rakes a day in April, 162.1 in May and 160.2 per day in June, CIL Chairman NC Jha had said.

The average rakes availability in 2010-11 was 161 rakes a day as against the requirement of 190 per day, while in 2009-10 it stood at 156.8 rakes a day on an average.

The state-run mining giant had entered into an agreement with the Coal Ministry for offtake of 2 MT from the stockpile besides dispatch of proposed 452 MT, the production target for the current fiscal.

CIL could dispatch only 424 MT of coal last fiscal though it mined 431 MT. The company, which accounts for over 82% of the domestic production, has been facing problems of coal evacuation due to the shortage of railway rakes.
