Steel Authority of India (SAIL)has slashed the price of galvanised corrugated (GC) sheets by Rs 600-3,000 per tonne this month due to slackening demand.

The price of GC sheets (0.63 mm), as indicated in company website, has been brought down the most in Bangalore from Rs 60,200 a tonne in May to Rs 57,200 per tonne in June. GC sheets are used mainly for roofing, industrial sheds, panelling, automobile bodies and household boxes among others.

SAIL sells GC sheets, produced at Bokaro Steel Plant (BSP), under the brand name of "SAIL Jyoti".

The price of GC sheets (0.5 mm) has also got the highest cut in the southern city Rs 2,900 a tonne to Rs 59,000. A company official said the reduction in the price of GC sheets are due to subdued demand. "The price is determined by market dynamics," he added.

GC sheets are coated with zinc metal and the process is known as galvanising. These are obtained upon corrugating of GP (Galvanised Plain) sheets in corrugating machine.

In Delhi, GC sheets (0.5mm) would now cost Rs 56,500 a tonne from Rs 57,600 a tonne, while the thicker version would be available at Rs 54,700 per tonne, down from 55,900 a month ago, the latest price list revealed.

In Kolkata, the price of both the variants has been cut by Rs 600 per tonne to Rs 57,400 per tonne for products of 0.5 mm thickness and Rs 55,700 for sheets having 0.63 mm width.

Similarly, the price for both products have been revised downward by Rs 2,800 per tonne in Goa to Rs 61,000 (for 0.5mm) and Rs 59,200 (for 0.63 mm).

SAIL also produces GC sheets at its Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP). The price for the products made in this plant are often different from those produced in BSP. The company has slashed the price of sheets made in RSP by upto Rs 2,100 a tonne.
