Tata Motors March total sales tumble 28% to 72,712 units

Tata Motors' total sales in March plunged 28 percent year-on-year to 72,712 units, as customers continued to shun passenger vehicles and medium & heavy commercial vehicle demand remained sluggish.

    Tata Motors' total sales in March plunged 28 percent year-on-year to 72,712 units, as customers continued to shun passenger vehicles and medium & heavy commercial vehicle demand remained sluggish.


    The company's total domestic sales were down 27 percent to 69,610 units. It must be noted that sales in March 2012, included 1,415 units of Fiat cars sold in India. Tata Motors no more sells Fiat cars. 


    The India's largest truck and bus maker sold 56,813 CVs, down 2 percent from a year ago. M&HCV sales, slumped 32 percent to 14,852 units last month.


    Tata Motors, however, said that March CV sales were highest ever for a month in FY13, helped by highest ever monthly sales growth for pickups and small CVs.


    It sold 6,981 pick-ups (Super Ace, Xenon and Tata 207) and 29,960 SCVs (Ace and Magic range) in March.


    The passenger vehicle business, meanwhile, remains on a slippery slope. Sales last month were down 67 percent to 12,347 units. Tata Motors sold 8,903 units of the Nano, Indica and Indigo range and 3,444 units of the Sumo, Safari, Aria and Venture range, it said.


    For the full year (2012-13) Tata Motors sold 8.10 lakh units, down 11 percent.

    Tata Motors shares closed down 1.4 percent at Rs 265.50 on NSE on Monday. The sales numbers were announced after market closed.
