Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman has pegged fertiliser subsidy at Rs 1.68 lakh crore for FY26, lower than the revised estimate of Rs 1.71 lakh crore for the current financial year.
The initial Budget estimate for fertiliser subsidy for FY25 was Rs 1.64 lakh crore. The government added Rs 6,594 crore in December, bringing the total to Rs 1.71 lakh crore.
The government has been making efforts to promote organic and alternative fertilisers to reduce dependency on chemical fertilisers such as urea and NPK. The use of nano urea and nano DAP is also being encouraged to reduce the subsidy burden.
India’s major subsidies consist of food, fertiliser and petroleum. This is pegged at Rs 3.83 lakh crore for FY26.
