Celebrity nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar doesn’t believe in mincing words, and part of her appeal is her straightforward talk on social media about issues that are brushed under the carpet — including old ways of self-care that have been redefined to suit the commercial interests of brands.
Rujuta shared on her social media what she called the “OG forms of self-care” that, according to her, Instagram doesn’t tell anyone about.
Her first tip was something as simple yet useful as keeping fresh milk aside for the afternoon chai or coffee. She wrote, “‘Put yourself first,’ in the gentlest and coolest way, was women keeping some fresh milk aside from their morning stock. No explaining, no guilt-tripping, just the best brewed chai on a breezy balcony in your own company.”
Her second tip included taking an afternoon nap for 20–30 minutes “without phone, iPad, TV.” She mocked the “12-step skincare” routines that women follow now, instead of going back to the good old idea of “beauty sleep,” which keeps the hormones balanced, the skin glowing, and the heart forgiving.

The third tip was about looking after one’s jewellery. She detailed, “Adorning the body with jewels (even flowers) was routine. But more importantly, younger girls in the family knew which piece was coming to whom. ‘I will give this to you’ was routine too. Celebrating the body in the moment while accepting its eventual death normalised and mainstreamed it.”
Rujuta shared that Instagram is far from showing the mundane and the things that don’t easily catch people’s fancy. But if you look around, self-care and self-love have been around in the simplest of things, dating back to old times when wisdom and beauty reigned.

She concluded by saying, “They have been left behind by women who lived before us, notice them and make room in your heart to celebrate life on an ongoing basis.”
Many users applauded her for the reminder, much needed in the world today. A user commented, “Thank you for reminding us of our lost traditions and heritage. It’s such a breath of fresh air in today’s world.”
Another shared, “It’s always about finding happiness in the little moments of the day. I always keep my phone aside twice a day while I have my coffee/tea and just look outside the window. It’s a strict no-phone ritual.”
