Many people today believe happiness is a constant state that can be bought, earned, or engineered. However, One of the most renowned gurus and philosophers, Guru Nanak teaches that this approach is flawed. He was the founder of Sikhism and a spiritual reformer who emphasised equality, compassion and inner peace. He once said, “In this world when you ask for happiness, Pain steps forward”
Guru Nanak suggests that when we demand happiness, we place it outside ourselves and attach it to conditions; people, money, status, relationships, or success. This creates a constant gap between what we have and what we think we need. Pain steps forward because life is unpredictable, and our expectations often fail. The moment we stop chasing happiness and start accepting life as it is, joy arrives naturally as a by-product, not as a demand.
In the age of social media, we are bombarded with images of perfect lives. This fuels a belief that happiness is permanent and always visible. When reality fails to match the ideal, we feel inadequate and anxious. Guru Nanak’s wisdom is a reminder that pain is not a punishment but a natural response to unmet expectations. Calm acceptance helps us stay resilient, even when life is messy.
