Happy Lohri 2026: Celebrate Lohri with these traditional foods that warm, heal and nourish

At its heart, Lohri is about sharing. Sesame seeds, jaggery, peanuts, and sugarcane offered to the fire are more than symbolic -- they represent abundance, hope, and gratitude. These gestures, repeated year after year, transform everyday ingredients into moments of collective meaning

  • Modern Lohri celebrations blend tradition with mindful, healthy gifting

Lohri arrives wrapped in warmth of crackling bonfires, familiar songs, and tables laden with food that carries more meaning than indulgence. Rooted in agrarian tradition, the festival marks the seasonal transition while honouring rituals that have long brought families and communities together.

Lohri greetings: Winter indulgence

What sets Lohri apart from many festive occasions is that its culinary traditions are not about excess for the sake of celebration, but nourishment shaped by climate, labour, and lived experience. As Rajan Sethi, MD at Ikk Panjab (Bright Hospitality), explains, “Lohri food is deeply seasonal and incredibly practical.” He views festive fare as indulgence with intent, woven into the wisdom of shared Punjabi heritage.

According to Sethi, Lohri isn’t about indulgence for the sake of it; it’s about eating what the land gives you in that moment. He informs, “In Punjab, winters are harsh, and the food evolved to keep the body warm, nourished, and energetic. Dishes like makki di roti with sarson da saag, til-gur ladoos, rewri, gajak, and peanut chikkis are all centred around ingredients that generate internal heat. Sesame seeds, jaggery, maize, mustard greens, and peanuts are winter crops and are fresh, local, and at their nutritional peak during this time.”

Happy Lohri recipes

There is a quiet intelligence in this approach to festive eating. Every ingredient serves a purpose, every preparation reflects the rhythm of rural life and the demands of cold weather. Sethi adds, “Ingredients like desi ghee, whole wheat flour, besan, gond (edible gum), dry fruits, jaggery, and khoya are nutrient-dense and functional. Take pinnis, for instance — they’re almost like ancestral energy bars. Gond supports joint health, ghee helps the body absorb nutrients, jaggery aids digestion, and nuts provide sustained warmth and strength. Similarly, atta or besan halwas are comforting, restorative, and ideal for winter consumption. We look at these festive preparations not just as recipes, but as stories of care as food that was made to nourish families through cold winters, heavy labour, and changing times.”

This perspective elevates Lohri fare beyond nostalgia. It positions traditional sweets and savouries as cultural knowledge passed down through generations with recipes that evolved not in test kitchens, but in lived homes, shaped by necessity and intuition.

Traditional Lohri rituals

In contemporary homes, the way Lohri is celebrated may look more styled, but the emotion remains intact. Thoughtfully arranged trays of winter delicacies, handcrafted boxes filled with sweets, and curated festive hampers have become part of the modern ritual. Natural materials, earthy tones, and tactile textures feel especially resonant with the spirit of the festival.

For many, this shift has also opened space for mindful celebration. Arushi Kathuria, Founder of Pink Knots, sees Lohri gifting as an opportunity to blend tradition with conscious choices. She says, “A healthy Lohri gift can still feel festive when it features premium, natural ingredients like artisanal jaggery-based sweets, nuts and seeds, thoughtfully curated and elegantly packaged. Conscious portioning and clean ingredients allow families to celebrate mindfully, making wellness a meaningful part of festive indulgence.”
