Skincare is often thought to be a woman’s territory, as they are considered to prioritise beauty and appearance more than men. While men are fast catching up, many still overlook the importance of looking after their skin, which is the body’s largest organ.

This has led to their facing skin challenges influenced by increasing pollution, stressful lifestyles, irregular sleep cycles, and prolonged screen time. This International Men’s Day, it is time to pay attention to yourself and save your skin from long-term damage. Dr Jijith KR, Director and Chief Dermatologist at COSMALIFE Skin Clinic, Bengaluru, suggests starting with simple yet consistent care, which can be highly effective. He shared the following basic steps for men’s skincare…

First Things First: Cleansing followed by moisturising

Cleansing is the very first step in the skincare routine. Men naturally produce more oil due to higher testosterone levels, making their skin prone to clogged pores and acne. Using a gentle, pH-balanced cleanser twice a day helps remove dirt, sweat, and excess oil without damaging the skin barrier. Over-cleansing can be counterproductive, so sticking to morning and night cleansing is sufficient.

Hydration is the next essential step, and contrary to common perception, moisturisers are not meant only for dry skin. Modern formulations are lightweight, non-greasy, and absorb quickly, making them ideal for all skin types. Ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and niacinamide provide deep hydration, strengthen the skin barrier, regulate oil production, and reduce redness. Moisturised skin ages better, heals faster, and appears healthier, making this step non-negotiable.

Embrace the Sunscreen

With rising UV exposure and environmental stressors, sunscreen acts as the most powerful shield against tanning, pigmentation, and premature ageing. Men should opt for a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher and apply it every morning, even when staying indoors, because UV rays penetrate through windows and screens. Gel-based or matte sunscreens are particularly suitable for men as they leave no sticky residue. Consistent use of sunscreen not only improves skin tone but also significantly reduces the long-term risk of skin cancer, making it the most effective anti-ageing measure available.

Exfoliation

Exfoliation is another overlooked step that bears consideration. Since men have thicker skin and shave frequently, using a gentle chemical exfoliant once or twice a week helps prevent ingrown hairs, smoothens rough patches, and maintains clearer pores. However, harsh scrubs should be avoided as they can cause microtears and irritation. When it comes to shaving, preparing the skin with warm water or a mild cleanser to soften facial hair. Shaving in the direction of hair growth, using a hydrating gel, and applying a soothing, alcohol-free post-shave product containing aloe vera, panthenol, or allantoin can help prevent bumps, redness, and razor burns.

Winding Down - Night Routine

A simple night routine can further support repair and rejuvenation. After cleansing, applying a moisturiser or a targeted serum helps the skin recover from daily damage. Ingredients like retinol, peptides, or squalane offer benefits ranging from reducing fine lines and improving firmness to boosting hydration. Starting slowly with retinol is important, especially for sensitive skin.

Lifestyle Habits to Embrace

Beyond external skincare, lifestyle choices play an equally vital role. Hydration, a balanced diet rich in antioxidants, regular exercise, adequate sleep, and limiting smoking and alcohol intake contribute directly to healthier, more resilient skin. Stress management is also essential, as stress hormones often trigger breakouts, sensitivity, and dullness.
