Pollution is often linked to smoggy skies, increasing traffic and poor lung health. However, dermatologists suggest that it can also damage your skin, which happens to be your first line of defence against the outside world.

Speaking about how the city air harms your skin, Dr Chandani Jain Gupta, Head Dermatologist and Aesthetic Physician, Elantis Healthcare, New Delhi, tells Moneycontrol, “Our skin is constantly fighting off pollutants. In cities, tiny particles from vehicles, cigarette smoke, and factories settle on your skin, clogging pores and causing inflammation. Over time, this can make your skin look dull, uneven, and older than it really is.”

Some pollutants, she adds, like nitrogen dioxide and ozone, go a step further. They create free radicals, unstable molecules that break down collagen and elastin, the proteins that keep your skin firm and bouncy. “This oxidative stress speeds up wrinkles and slows down the skin’s natural repair process,” Dr Gupta adds.

Pollution and everyday skin problems

Studies show that polluted air can worsen eczema, acne, and other allergic skin reactions. Sensitive skin becomes even more reactive, and those already struggling with skin conditions may notice flare-ups. “We’re seeing young patients with premature ageing and pigmentation problems not just from the sun, but because they’re constantly exposed to city pollution,” says Dr Gupta tells.

Moreover, pollution strips away the skin’s natural oils and antioxidants. This weakens the protective barrier, letting irritants and bacteria get in more easily. This causes dryness, itching, and inflammation. “Even the tiniest particles can sneak deep into the skin, interfering with normal cell function,” she says.

How to escape city pollution

Dr Gupta shares simple ways to fight back: You can’t escape city pollution entirely, but you can protect your skin with a few easy habits:

  • Cleanse properly: Wash your face every evening to remove dirt and pollutants.
  • Use antioxidants: Skincare with vitamin C and E helps neutralise free radicals.
  • Don’t skip sunscreen: UV rays make pollution damage worse, so protect your skin daily.
  • Eat smart: Fruits and vegetables boost your skin’s natural defences.
  • Hydrate and moisturise: Keeps the skin barrier strong and resilient.

“Simple, consistent habits make a huge difference. Even small daily steps can protect your skin from the invisible stressors in city life,” Dr Gupta stresses.
