Home is a space where we can be ourselves without the masks we wear outside. It’s no longer about impressing guests with polished, overly refined aesthetics, but about keeping things functional and more in tune with who we are and how we feel. While it’s good to be aware of trends, it’s also important to stick to those that last even when no one is talking about them anymore
Gita Ramanan, CEO and co-founder of DesignCafe, shared with Moneycontrol what will dominate home design in 2026. So, if you are planning to renovate or update a room, her practical ideas and forecasts will provide enough inspiration.
According to Gita, “In 2026, home design will look a lot more like long-term investing and a lot less like trading.” This implies it’s not going to be about incorporating every new trend, but sticking to the ones that pay off in the long run. “For most Indians, a home is the biggest asset on their balance sheet, yet we often treat interiors like a series of quick bets, festival makeovers and impulse furniture in response to short-lived trends,” she said.

To efficiently use the space you have, there’s nothing better than spending money on pieces that are multi-functional with materials that last longer. “The smarter resolution now is to design like a patient investor: put more money into the ‘compounding’ parts of the home: the kitchen, wardrobes, storage, and multi-use rooms that earn their keep,” she advised. Hence, it’s wiser to spend on good planning, durable materials, smart storage and layouts that can flex as your family, work and income evolve.

For Gita, what works are trends that last. So, opting for warm neutrals for a cosy appeal works well for major parts of the house, and it can be elevated with art, decor, and cushions. She said, “For Indian buyers, it also means a modern, comfortable visual language you won’t be tired of by the next trend cycle, namely: warm neutrals, deeper accent colours and pieces that reflect your life, not a catalogue. You can always ‘trade’ in cushions, art and decor; the core layout is your blue-chip portfolio.”
Thus, the homes that will hold value best in 2026 will not be the flashiest, but the ones where every square foot has been designed for function, calm and personal meaning — that’s when design spend starts behaving like value, not just an expense.
