  • Design your home like dressing an outfit for balance and style
  • Use neutral tones and varied textures as your base layer
  • Add statement pieces and layer decor for personality and depth

Designing a home can feel similar to choosing the right outfit. Just like a good outfit requires balance, layers, and personality, good home design requires the same. “Thinking of your home as something to ‘dress’ can help shift your focus to details that will make your home polished, relaxed, and uniquely you,” Niti Gupta, a multi-disciplinary creative design expert, told Moneycontrol.

Here are four steps she suggested to make it look truly attractive.

Start with the basics: Tones and textures

Consider the base layer first, similar to the bottom pieces of a good outfit. In clothing, this can be a well-fitted pair of jeans, or a simple white t-shirt. In home design, base layers consist of neutral walls, flooring, and large pieces of furniture like sofas or beds. Neutral and soft earthy tones like beige, cream, grey, etc act like baseline clothing pieces to provide flexibility and make the space less overwhelming.

Next is the texture, which is similar to the fabrics of an outfit, like a wool sweater, silk blouse, or leather jacket which all add depth to an outfit. The same goes for interiors. Textures like wood, metal, linen, velvet, and woven fabrics will add more interest. The addition of a chunky knit throw to a sleek sofa or a jute rug under a glass coffee table will elevate the look of the space just as velvet cushions will elevate a linen chair.

Add a statement piece

Now it is time for the statement piece. Something bold that will pull attention, and do the same job a bold accessory or standout jacket would do. In the living room, it could be a unique light fixture, a piece of art that really stands out or an unusual chair. Statement pieces give personality and depth while giving design a centre to focus on.

Perfect the art of layering

Next, the secret lies in layering. These would be like the jewellery, the belts, and the scarves in an outfit. In the room there will be decorative pillows, vases, candles, and books or small sculptures. This is where you can have fun with colour, and with styles. You will be able to add and change without committing to a complete redesign.

These elements will give you a lot of room to play, and will be the easiest to change with the seasons or your taste.

Aim to create a balance

Balance in your home is as important as balance in an outfit. While stylish ensembles combine bold and subtle elements, your home should also combine bold statement pieces with more subtle calming neutrals. Dominance of just loud pieces in your home can lead to a chaotic environment, or in contrast, a dominance of more basic, subtle pieces can lead to a dull space.

When you think about decorating your home on the same lines as you would about dressing an outfit, with strong basics, layered textures, and statement accessories, you will end up with a home that is cohesive, stylish and effortlessly put together.
