  • Kitchen colour choices now focus on durability and long-term appeal
  • Five palettes suggested: olive green, terracotta, sage, charcoal, navy blue
  • Matte finishes and functional zoning help maintain a practical, inviting kitchen

When it comes to the kitchen, choosing a colour scheme can be quite confusing. It is a place where a lot of time is spent making coffee, catching up with friends, and scrolling on the phone. Therefore, it’s only natural to pay attention and give it a warm, inviting character by choosing the right cabinet and wall hues.

While customers have a wide array of options to choose from, there are always priorities that are kept in consideration. Kuldip Raina, Managing Director & CEO of Shalimar Paints, spoke to Moneycontrol and shared, “With longer repaint cycles and deeper involvement in home decisions, colour is no longer chosen impulsively. Instead, it is evaluated for durability, ease of maintenance, and long-term relevance alongside visual appeal.”

This change can be spotted in the kitchen, where increased daily use is driving colour choices. He shared five colour palettes with lasting appeal for Indian kitchens that you’d instantly love, especially if you are planning to renovate or buy a new house.

1. Olive Green with Warm Wood Tones

This colour combination is rooted  in balance. Raina said, “Olive tones stabilise base cabinets and tall storage units, while warm wood softens the overall composition. Matte finishes reduce the visibility of fingerprints and minor wear.” Together, the colours create a calm, cohesive kitchen that remains practical, durable, and easy to maintain.

2. Terracotta and Cream

“The logic behind this colour scheme is rooted in functional zoning. Terracotta, a warm, earthy colour inspired by natural clay defines lower cabinets and high-use areas, where durability and stain resistance matter most, while cream lifts upper cabinets and walls to preserve openness,” he explained. The result is a warm, balanced kitchen that supports daily use without visually crowding the space.

3. Sage Green and Off-White

Soft sage, a muted grey-green shade inspired by sage leaves, introduces colour without visual load, while off-white maximises light reflection across cabinets and walls. “Ideal for compact urban kitchens, this palette enhances openness without overwhelming the room. It supports visual clarity, movement, and usability, delivering sustained comfort and functional efficiency beyond the initial design choice.”

4. Charcoal Grey with Yellow or Walnut Accents

Raina pointed out, “Charcoal grey works by grounding cabinetry and storage units while reducing the visibility of oil and masala stains common in kitchens. Warm walnut finishes or controlled yellow accents introduce contrast and warmth”. This palette supports durability and ease of maintenance while maintaining a contemporary character suited to everyday kitchen use.

5. Navy Blue and Crisp White

Contrast and structure underpin this colour scheme. “Navy cabinetry adds depth and architectural presence, shifting with light from inky tones to refined blue. Crisp white walls and surfaces restore brightness and scale. Together, they create a well-defined, premium kitchen that feels composed, balanced, and enduring, especially in larger, well-lit spaces,” he explained.
