Actor Margot Robbie is busy promoting her upcoming movie titled Wuthering Heights. Recently, she attended the movie's world premiere at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles and what caught the attention about the actor's overall look was the necklace she wore. It is popularly known as the Taj Mahal diamond necklace. Can you guess its cost? Well, its reported estimated worth is around $8 million (Rs 74 crores).

The iconic necklace belongs to Elizabeth Taylor. It was given to her by her fifth husband and actor Richard Burton on former's 40th birthday. Speaking about the necklace she wore, Robbie shared she felt it had a lot of romantic history and that it felt appropriate for the occasion.

About the Taj Mahal Diamond necklace

Set in a gold and ruby Cartier chain, the heart-shaped table-cut diamond bears a Parsi inscription that reads, 'Love is everlasting'. Interestingly, it also has the inscription of Nur Jahan's name (12th wife of Mughal emperor Shah Jahangir). So, it is believed that the gem was given to Nur by Jahangir and later it got passed down to their son Shah Jahan.

Some jewellery experts and scholars believe that Shah Jahan eventually gave this necklace to Mumtaz and this explains why it is called the Taj Mahal Diamond.

The necklace was later acquired by French luxury brand Cartier in 1971. Later, Cartier's in-house designer Alfred Durante created a gold and ruby chain, studded with rondelles and tassels, as originally the diamond was set on a traditional Indian silk cord.

In 1972, Burton purchased the necklace from Cartier to present it as a birthday gift to Taylor. Finally, on February 27, while the duo were in Budapest to celebrate Taylor's birthday, he surprised her with the beautiful necklace.

The diamond necklace was eventually sold for $8.8 million in December 2011 as part of a larger sale of Taylor’s estate, breaking records for Indian jewels at the time. Recently, when Robbie wore the necklace, she rightly turned many heads. She wore it with a beautiful Schiaparelli couture gown.
