When it comes to skin and hair care, there’s plenty of information available online. On social media, influencers often share tips and tricks they swear by, and one of them is double washing. It basically involves shampooing your hair twice in one shower session.
Double washing focuses on enhancing scalp hygiene and creating a healthier environment for hair growth when done correctly. Dermatologist Dr Abhishek Pilani, Founder of Assure clinic and a Hair Transplant & Restoration specialist, told Moneycontrol, “Although it may seem unnecessary at first glance, the technique is based on how buildup accumulates on the scalp over time and how cleansing works most effectively.”

He explained, “The first wash primarily removes surface-level impurities. Throughout the day, the scalp collects sebum (natural oil), sweat, dust, environmental pollutants, and residue from styling products such as serums, dry shampoo, gels, and sprays. Hard water minerals can also contribute to buildup. This initial cleanse helps break down and loosen these deposits. Often, the first lather feels lighter or produces less foam because it is actively dissolving oil and debris rather than simply creating bubbles.”
According to the dermatologist, the second wash works on a cleaner base. Once the superficial layer of buildup is removed, the shampoo can make better contact with the scalp and cleanse more thoroughly. This step allows active ingredients whether hydrating agents, soothing botanicals, anti-dandruff compounds, or strengthening proteins to perform more effectively. For those using medicated or treatment-based shampoos, double cleansing can significantly improve ingredient penetration and overall results.
Dr Pilani said, “This method can be particularly beneficial for individuals with oily scalps, people who exercise frequently, those exposed to high levels of pollution, or anyone who uses multiple styling products. Persistent buildup can clog hair follicles, disturb the scalp’s microbiome, and create inflammation that may contribute to itching, flaking, dullness, or excessive oiliness.”
A properly cleansed scalp supports balanced oil production and better circulation, both of which are important for healthy hair growth.

However, Dr Pilani warned that double shampooing is not essential for everyone. “People with dry, sensitive, curly, colour-treated, or chemically processed hair should be cautious. Over-cleansing can strip away essential natural oils, weaken the scalp barrier, and lead to dryness, irritation, or rebound oil production.”
The key lies in moderation and technique. Use a small amount of shampoo each time, massage gently with your fingertips never your nails and focus on the scalp rather than the hair lengths. Rinse thoroughly between washes.
When tailored to your scalp type and lifestyle, double shampooing can support improved scalp balance and long-term hair health without compromising its natural protective function.
