A surprising link between acne breakouts and your oral hygiene routine has gained attention, thanks to insights from medical professionals. According to Dr Mehss, a medical student from Turkey, the timing of your teeth-brushing routine could be affecting your skin health more than you realise.

How brushing your teeth could lead to breakouts

In a viral TikTok video, Dr Mehss showcased images of patients with acne concentrated around the chin, mouth, and jawline—areas that frequently come into contact with toothpaste residue and oral bacteria. She pointed out that if you brush your teeth after washing your face, you might be unknowingly exposing your skin to acne triggers.

"When you brush your teeth after cleansing, bacteria from your mouth can transfer onto your freshly cleaned skin, potentially leading to breakouts," she explained. Additionally, toothpaste residue that drips onto the skin can cause dryness and irritation, further aggravating acne-prone areas.

Dr Mehss urged people to reverse the order of their routine—brushing before washing—to prevent this unwanted irritation. She also highlighted that dermatologists and dentists support this recommendation.

Another expert agrees

Dr Geetika Mittal Gupta, a well-known skincare expert, echoed these concerns in a widely shared Instagram video. She emphasised that brushing after showering or washing your face increases the risk of transferring bacteria and toothpaste ingredients onto the skin, which could contribute to acne.

"Since acne often stems from excess oil, bacteria, and dead skin cells, it’s crucial to minimise unnecessary bacterial exposure. Brushing before showering can help reduce this risk," Dr Gupta advised.

Scientific evidence supports this theory

This claim isn’t just anecdotal—it’s supported by research. A 1983 study published in the International Journal of Toxicology found that Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), a common ingredient in toothpaste, can cause mild to moderate skin irritation with repeated exposure.

Dr Joshua Zeichner, a leading dermatologist from Mount Sinai Hospital, further explained the effects of SLS in a 2019 interview with Well + Good: "SLS is a known irritant that can trigger inflammation and skin sensitivity. It was once widely used in cleansers and toothpaste as a surfactant to remove dirt, but many products have since eliminated it due to its harsh effects on sensitive skin."

The root causes of acne

While toothpaste and bacteria transfer may contribute to breakouts, acne is generally influenced by multiple factors. According to Penn Medicine, acne is primarily caused by:

  • Hormonal changes
  • Excess oil production
  • Clogged pores
  • Bacterial growth on the skin

Meanwhile, Harvard Health adds that adult acne can also be triggered by stress, diet, certain medications, genetics, and even skincare products.
