If snack time is a struggle, this delicious recipe is going to make your day. Dr Karan Rajan, an NHS surgeon, shared it in one of his latest videos, explaining why it is a blessing for your gut health. “If you make this, it’s not just a high-protein dessert, it is a microbiome masterclass,” he said.

The video shows a content creator adding honey and cinnamon to a pan with bananas, whipping and caramelising them, and serving them in a bowl with Greek yoghurt, walnuts, and dark chocolate chips.

Health benefits of the ingredients

Dr Rajan explained the health benefits of each ingredient. Here’s why they make this healthy bowl rich in vitamins and minerals.

Health benefits of Greek yoghurt

Greek yoghurtis known to be rich in protein as well as calcium, which studies show supports colonic health when consumed at least 300 mg per day. It also contains live and active cultures such as Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus, which can help colonise the gut.

Benefits of walnuts

The walnuts have prebiotic fibres and Omega-3 fatty acids. These can help to feed the bacteria added with the yoghurt. They are excellent for heart health, as they reduce “bad cholesterol” and blood pressure.

Nutrition in bananas

Bananas contain fructooligosaccharides and more resistant starch when slightly green. This can feed butyrate-producing bacteria in the lower colon. They benefit heart and digestive health, and provide a quick boost of energy.

Cinnamon health benefits

This popular spice contains polyphenols, which can feed Akkermansia muciniphila, a gut-barrier bacteria. It has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, and can help protect against chronic diseases such as diabetes and cancer.

Health benefits of dark chocolate

One with 70 percent cocoa has flavonoids and fibre. Flavonoids are antioxidants, which can promote the gut-liver communication, as well as increase microbial diversity.

Dr Rajan explained how the beneficial compounds and diversity of fibres are not working alone in this yoghurt bowl. “There is some natural synergy between the probiotics from the yoghurt and the prebiotics from the walnuts, banana, and dark chocolate, which makes the beneficial bacteria even more efficient at clearing pathogenic bacterial strains,” he said.

If you are looking to improve your health with something easy and delicious, give it a shot. It may become your favourite go-to snack.
